Burning Bush A Noxious Weed Warns Manitobans
Gardeners are warned against planting kochia or Burning Bush in Manitoba. Weed specialists say Kochia was classed as a noxious weed three years ago and may be prosecuted under The Noxious Weeds Act. Once confined to a southwest area, it has spread to Shoal Lake and the Red River Valley, infesting cultivated fields with seed that disperses abundantly.

Controlling Pocket Gophers in Manitoba Farms
Manitoba farmers seek control of pocket gophers using natural predators first, then poisoning, gassing, or trapping if needed. Gophers tunnel underground during most of the year, surfacing mainly in breeding season to feed on alfalfa and grass roots and occasionally invade gardens. Canada’s R D Bird describes gophers as the size of common gophers with hairless tails and large external cheek pouches, noting they resemble moles but moles are rare in the province’s fields. He suggests methods including placing baited turnip, carrot, or potato dust into a tunnel, or pouring calcium cyanide gas into a tunnel after locating it with a probing stick. A standard gopher trap can be used with the trap jaws parallel to tunnel sides, the opening covered with a shingle and soil, and light excluded to prevent the animal from burying the poison or trap.

Changes Made In Branding Rules in Manitoba
Manitoba bars and brands rules tighten livestock identification with new registration required for all brands. Amended Animal Husbandry Act limits brands to four positions and specific shapes, two letters or numbers plus symbols, with G in reverse position. Registration aims to prevent ownership confusion and brand duplication as cattle mixing grows.

Seed weed spreads far and triggers hay fever
Weed breaks off at soil surface and rolls with the wind, enabling miles of spread from a single plant. It is a heavy pollen producer aggravating hay fever sufferers. Experts say control is best achieved by spraying the seedlings with 24D or MCPA at one-half pound per acre.
