Canadian farmers kept war output high despite labor and tool shortages

Wartime pressures forced hundreds of thousands of Canadian agricultural workers into the armed services or other essential jobs. Farm labor rose from 985,000 in 1943 to 1,025,000 in 1944 while female farm workers grew from 765,000 to 780,000. Even with victory in Europe, labor and machinery scarcities linger, but exports to Britain and other Allies remain massive, reinforcing farming as a top wartime industry.
