New Crop Development Job for Specialists

Ottawa describes crop development as a team effort across disciplines. Agriculture Canada’s Dr. Jack Morrison notes market needs drive breeding alongside yield and disease resistance, with scientists like biochemists and agrologists joining plant breeders to tailor crops for food and industry. The Cinderella rapeseed success illustrates this teamwork, aided by chemical engineers and low erucic acid goals. The department uses management by objectives to align specialists and growers toward profitable varieties.

Guaranteed Income Bill Gets Approval

Manitoba moves toward a 200 dollar a month guaranteed income for pensioners with second reading in the Legislature. The bill lets the cabinet set most details, while MLAs push for higher levels and retroactive payments to combat inflation. A proposed guaranteed annual income experiment may cost over 100 million dollars annually, with privacy protections and debates on applicability to unemployed seniors aged 61 to 65. Community notices include a MacGregor reunion in Assiniboine Park on June 1 and a Sandra Wickland shower on May 31 at Austin United Church. Sports Day meeting set for May 27 at 8:30 pm in the rink.

Sputnik, a sunflower variety developed in the USSR, was introduced to Canada in 1970 and tested three seasons in Western Canada. Henry Enns of Agriculture Canada at the Winnipeg Agronomists Conference said Sputnik has higher oil content and, in Manitoba trials across four locations, yielded 3 percent more per acre and showed 10.8 percent higher oil per acre than Peredovik or Krasnodarets, with similar maturity and disease resistance.
