Time to Plough Summer Fallow Experiment at Brandon Farm
An experiment at Brandon Experimental Farm tested spring ploughing dates for summer fallow fields to determine the best timing. Three fields were ploughed six inches deep on May 18 and May 15 or July 13, while the rest were cropped to wheat. Over 15 years late ploughing underperforms earlier ploughing, with May 15 yielding 39 bushels per acre and July 13 yielding 32, aligning with other western stations' results.
