Paving Start Planned on Portage Bypass
The Portage la Prairie bypass on the Trans-Canada highway will begin concrete surfacing when spring restrictions lift. The 8.4 mile bypass runs south of Portage la Prairie and connects with the Trans-Canada extension, with four more miles to No. 1 highway. Nelson River Construction Company builds the easterly section from the east interchange to just west of Southport road. Material crushing resumed last fall for summer surfacing, with paving starting at the eastern end and expected finish by July. The bypass should be in use this fall, while winter work on overpasses and bridges nears mid-summer completion. Gravel shortages persist. pits north and east of Poplar Point supply material, with round-trip hauls of about 80 miles by truckers.

Medical Insurance And Treatment Costs Going Up
Manitoba residents face higher medical insurance and treatment costs as the MMS increases its payments to doctors and raises premiums. The MMA and MMS agree on a 75 percent MMS claim payment with doctors allowed to bill the difference, and exemptions for those with no taxable income. Applications will verify income, with low income patients receiving protection from extra billing.

Fresh Water Fishing Rules in Manitoba
Manitoba anglers are urged to follow sport rules this season including using only one rod in summer angling and taking no more than the daily limit. Fish are plentiful and a valid license is required. A questionnaire license invites each angler to answer questions to improve future enjoyment and set a good example for younger family members.
