Blowouts and Accidents on the Illinois Tollway Study
Northwestern University Traffic Institute reports on a one year study of tire disablement on the Illinois Tollway. Among 1,486 automobile accidents involving four tired vehicles, flat tires contributed to no more than 36 incidents and possibly as few as 13. Most flats did not lead to crashes. even when they did, fatalities were rare. Weather increased flats. deer and livestock caused more accidents than flats. The study finds no consistent link between tire blowouts and higher accident rates, with rear tires most common and warm weather raising flat rates.

Quick Recovery from Violence on TV
For years adults condemn children’s TV violence and officials link it to crime. Psychologists note varied results, but the appeal may lie in easy wins for characters who suffer little lasting harm and recover quickly, unlike real life.
Breath Tests Move Forward in Manitoba Law Proposal
Provincial Secretary Stewart Mc Lean will introduce a bill to make breath tests for suspected drinking drivers compulsory despite earlier doubts about accuracy and enforcement. Polar Bears and a Manitoba River Crossing Recall
In Thompson journal stories from York Factory to Churchill he notes daily polar bear sightings and a strict Indian rule to walk past calmly. They only feared a bear gorging on whale remains and once offered a head as ritual to direct the tide for a peltry, a tale tied to a Manitoba crossing once home to a post office and merchants like A S Hislop.
