Field Work Expands Across MacGregor Area
Field work is becoming general in the MacGregor farming region with soil conditions delaying seeding. Subsoil moisture ranges from fair to poor, while surface moisture runs from fair to good in Manitoba, leaving grass growth low and feed limited in spots. Nationwide reports warn of low subsoil reserves and rising grasshopper infestations, with seeding possible next week in Beausejour area and wheat acreage rising in Minnedosa.

A Few Timely Rains Will Bring Good Crop
Manitoba agriculture officials foresee a mostly favorable start for crops with only a little rain needed to prevent a repeat of 1961 drought. Dr. Hedlin notes no danger before June and a few timely showers afterward could yield a good harvest. Soil moisture is better overall due to heavy winter snow, though western and northern regions remain drier. June is the critical month per Al Martin, with some areas at risk without rain then. Manitoba farmers produced 84 million bushels in 1961, roughly half of 1960's output.
