A Los Angeles teen hotline connecting youths with anonymous adult listeners has drawn about 5,000 calls since launch. Dr. Dale Garrell notes many youths seek communication, with 20 percent about relationships, 17 percent with parents, and seven percent on drugs. The staff includes graduate students and professionals, operating 6 p.m. to midnight daily.

Science fiction blurs with truth in space and child care debate

A Glasgow newspaper notes eerie parallels between Apollo 8 and Jules Verne, counting similarities in craft size, launch dates, and lunar altitude, suggesting science fiction often foreshadows discovery.

Two to Do the Work in a Fatigued Rant

An adult population calculation ends with only two people left to work. The speaker protests doing everything alone, claiming 199,998 in jail and 800,000 derelicts reduce the labor pool to two, him and another, exhausted by the burden.

Evans Outlines Hydro Project In The North

Manitoba Finance Minister Evans defended a northern hydro plan to flood Southern Indian Lake and divert the Churchill river for Nelson River development at Kettle Rapids. He argued the Kettle Rapids scheme is cheapest, at 5.92 mills per kilowatt including transmission, versus 8.35 mills for southern thermal power. He said the project would not trap Manitoba to one path, and northern development requires power. Opposition focused on studies, costs, and process, with debate adjourned after questioning access to information.

Indians Doubtful About Assurances

Saskatchewan legal counsel Allen Lueck told Indian Affairs Minister Jean Chretien that doubts about Ottawa honoring the 1876 treaty stem from cuts to off-reserve social services since the mid-1950s. He argued the “medicine chest” clause guaranteed free medical care, and noted non-reserve Indians now face medical care certificates costing $72 per family as a condition for care. Mr. Chretien said he would look into the situation.
