Freight moved in North Manitoba winter road system
Northern Affairs Minister Ron McBryde said 80 895 tons of supplies were moved this winter across ice and snow roads in northern Manitoba, far above the original 17 500 ton estimate. The report covers nine roads over 800 miles with costs of about 485 000 for construction and 172 000 for maintenance. Opposition leaders urge clearer benefits, review of all weather roads, and full accounting of funds. There is also a note that the first Canadian census in 1686 recorded 3 215 white residents.
