Potatoes Growers Seek Federal Help for Starch Industry
Bill Daman of the Manitoba Vegetable Marketing Commission urged federal action to aid the starch sector. He called for renewed efforts to curb unfair U S trading rules, creation of a national potato growers group, and funded experiments to boost quality and yield. Daman noted Canadian growers face low returns from strong American competition and suggested a local starch plant could use surpluses. Canada imported most starch despite Canadian plants producing only a fraction of demand. He highlighted tariff and quota disparities favoring the United States and gaps in Canadian imports.
