Saskatchewan Tax Changes Move Through Legislature

The Saskatchewan Legislature gave first reading to a package of tax changes promised in the 1970 71 budget. Treasurer D G Steuart introduced bills raising the provincial income tax surcharge to six percent retroactive to January 1 1970. Meals purchased at restaurants will be taxed like other retail items from April 1 with meals under two dollars exempt. Specific fuel taxes are adjusted March 3 including diesel and purple colored gas. Electricity used for heating homes and buildings would lose a tax. No provincial tax exists on fuel oils.
