Qualification of Manitoba teachers report released
The Manitoba Teachers’ Society released a survey based on 6,839 teachers or 98.1 percent of the force, showing a serious shortage of qualified staff at elementary and secondary levels. While salary schedules pushing higher qualifications encourage more graduates to enter teaching, many still lack credentials. The society is launching a recruitment program urging more university graduates to join. Provincial breakdown shows permits 16 percent, authority letters 1.5 percent, conditional 11.5 percent, B and second class 50.5 percent, first class 14 percent, graduates 19 percent. In Pine Creek Division the pattern is similar with 5.5 percent permits, 18 percent authority letters, 22 percent conditional, 58.7 percent B and second class, 73 percent A certificates, and 46 percent graduates.
