Reaching Goals Will Take Time says Manitoba minister
Manitoba Finance minister Saul Cherniak told a St Johns constituency meeting that the NDP government cannot cut property taxes immediately. He emphasized a philosophy that services should be paid for by those who receive them and that reaching the goal will take time while seeking alternative ways to ease property tax burden. He noted limited municipal control over property taxes, especially school board costs, unless services are cut, and highlighted Manitoba's high personal and corporate tax rates as a principle of ability to pay.

MFU Fights Corporate Control
The Manitova section of the National Farmers' Union urged the provincial government to counter growing corporate control of agricultural resources. A brief to the cabinet argued government aid promotes cheap farm food while producers face grain and dairy surpluses and reduced income opportunities. NFU president Roy Atkinson of Saskatoon pressed Manitoba for support before the Commons agriculture committee for a new pricing and marketing policy for feed grains. He warned freeing feed mills from wheat board rules has cost growers millions and could destabilize livestock and poultry markets.
