Indian Picket Line Protests Health Services Demands
A Friday picket outside the Indian health services building in The Pas protested federal health and welfare services. Led by Chief Gordon Lathlin, protesters demanded band council control over community health workers and the dismissal of Nora Andrews. Chief Lathlin and council walked out of a meeting with Dr. Maurice J. Dekoven after he said he lacked authority. The demonstration remained peaceful with signs calling for justice and stating they will not be cheated. Minister John Munro said he is reviewing reports from three groups and has not decided, while Andrews was ordered to leave the clinic.

Farmers Told to Wear Ear Plugs for Tractor Noise
Dr. Herb Buchwald of Alberta health warns at Western Canada Farm Safety Conference that long tractor noise can cause hearing loss and that 105 decibels from exhaust is well above safe levels. Saskatchewan official A L Reigert dismisses cab noise reduction as futile and suggests extending exhaust stacks. Agricultural engineer Tom Preston notes farmers modify tractors to gain power or hear engine notes, risking silent, lasting damage.
