Winter crop seed program speeds up new varieties
Agriculture Canada scientists run a global seed program, growing buckwheat in Florida and rapeseed in Chile to accelerate variety release. Two Regina specialists visit a California station every year to multiply seed from about 36 Canadian breeders, using winter nurseries near the Mexican border. The effort sped rust resistant flax release and now supports rapid seed production for prairie crops, helping farmers gain new varieties within a year and a half.
