Manitoba Legislature in Weeklong Debate on Unemployment Relief
The legislature last week saw Liberal Progressive MPs pledge confidence in the cabinet amid a debate over unemployment relief as a municipal concern. Premier Chen defended the 5 9 rate while promising provincial action if needed. New Portage la Prairie member W R Sexsmith gave a notable maiden speech. The Attorney General stressed maintaining law and order while opposing any anti-democratic or racially incendiary groups. Sessions end with heavy committee work ahead and a reminder of the weariness of daily legislative labor. The text closes with Dr J A Munn’s remarks about his son and ongoing proceedings.
