Who Owns Canada's Banks The Big Shots or Citizens

An examination shows Canada's banks are owned by a broad cross section of citizens. About 63 percent of shareholders are women, executors, trustees, and retired people, with 260 occupations represented among 50,185 holders of 15,000 chartered bank shares. Directors total 172, with loans to directors and their firms minimal, and banks barred from owning stock in other banks or insurance. The article argues ownership is diffuse and governance lies with competent leaders drawn from varied business backgrounds.
