France plans to pull two Nike and Hawk anti aircraft missile units from West Germany. NATO sources say the move follows France’s withdrawal from NATO military structures and affects bases at Stretten and Friedrichshafen. About 70,000 French troops in West Germany may lose NATO command by July 1 as talks on their status continue. A 15 plane F 100 squadron and 11,000 air force personnel were also withdrawn last week. The Standing Group will be abolished July 1 with duties shifting to the Atlantic Alliance’s 15 nation military committee. In Gretna Green, marriage fees rise to 35 shillings from 14.

Sugar Beets Could Double Production in Canada

S. Williams, chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization Board, said Friday that sugar beet production could be doubled in Canada with little loss in efficiency. Even doubled output would cover only about 35 percent of domestic needs, and land with poorer yields would be required. If domestic production rose, housewives would pay more than under the current system which relies on imports. Canada aims in talks with other nations in the International Sugar Agreement to stabilize price fluctuations both at home and in world markets.
