Glasgow the Great Seaport and Its Proud Legacy
An inland town motto Let Glasgow flourish by the preaching of the Word anchors Glasgow's history as a world seaport. The piece traces St Kentigern Mungo, Glasgow’s early evangelist, and lists streets, landmarks, and figures from Queen Victoria to Robert Burns. It details Clyde River works like Napier and Fairfield, naval shipbuilding, and advancements in iron and steam engines, including the Comet steam boat and Lord Lister’s septic innovations.
