The federal and Ontario governments announced a program under ARDA to purchase uneconomic farms in Ontario and transfer them to other farmers to form economic units. It includes rehabilitation retraining and grants, with about half of Ontario's 96 000 commercial farms eligible, land under $100 an acre, no expropriation, and long term leasing with first option to purchase.
Manitoba agriculture official Gi lam Somers urges farmers to optimize cropping programs by integrating soil type, moisture, crop sequence, fertility, weed and disease control, tillage, and economic evaluation. He advises soil tests, proper rotations, weed management, clean seed, and choosing methods that maximize profit on each farm.
Alberta government will start purchasing uneconomic farms to convert them into economic units under ARDA. Agriculture Minister Harry Strom said the program, modeled after Ontario, will share retraining costs with the federal government. Purchases have begun in Edson area, though none have been acquired yet.
In Agana Guam a secluded clearing houses a unique World War II dog cemetery for 23 X-9 Corps canines and handlers. A white cross marks the entrance, with white headstones bearing dog likenesses and names such as Gog and Bunkie among 16 enlisted dogs buried there.
