Manitoba debate over government auto insurance plan
Government members in the Manitoba Legislature opposed a Liberal amendment on second reading to create a government operated compulsory automobile insurance plan. Gil Molgat of Ste Rose argued for a competitive private market, urging the government to run its insurer alongside existing private firms to preserve consumer choice. No Plans To Further Use The Diversion
Manitoba Resources Minister Sidney Green told the Legislature there are no plans to use the Portage diversion to lower water levels on the Assiniboine River. He noted the diversion, used earlier to ease flooding, would not be employed now due to mercury pollution and no declared emergency. The pollution source, highest near Brandon, remains unfound.
