Vaccination Of Buffalo Is Completed In Park

Federal government veterinarians have completed vaccinating 3,500 buffalo in Wood Buffalo National Park to prevent anthrax. About 10,000 buffalo live in and around the park which straddles the Albertan Northwest Territories border. The effort stops short of vaccinating all due to size. In 1962 and 1963 more than 350 buffalo died from anthrax in the area. The herd is the world’s largest remaining. Anthrax is a bacterial infection attacking the spleen with high fever and near certain death. Soil can harbor spores for years.
