Air Mail Rates Rise as Volumes Grow in Three Years
George Herring, head of the Air and Land Mail Service, told the Commons Railways and Shipping Committee that payments to Trans-Canada Air Lines and two other carriers totaled 2,250,000 last year with an estimated 430,000 this year. He attributed the increases to service expansion, noting mail volume rose from 39,000 pounds to 740,000 pounds over three years and that doubling volume could pay for itself in five. He said the 60 cents per pound rate may drop after December 31 when revenue and expense differences are reviewed, with hopes passengers will bear more of airline costs and mail rates falling to 99 cents next year.
