Prairie provinces report improving conditions with high temperatures boosting growth. Wheat needs moisture in Alberta and Saskatchewan while Manitoba sees fair to good sugar beet progress. Quebec enjoys warm weather and hay harvesting. Ontario and Maritime rain affects crops. British Columbia warms but fruit drops reduce yields.
Provincial and Dominion governments back a farm help service to recruit harvest workers. Requisitions sent to 545 councillors in 116 rural municipalities seek estimates of needed labor, aiming to trim to minimum. Only 115 replies received, totaling 10 000 to 11 000 men, risking shortfalls across the province. Indians from northern reservations considered, but canvasses suggest under 1 000 workers from that source.
The Farm Help Service faces low submit counts from students and workers. In Winnipeg and Brandon about 3100 could be used, but only 100 names filed and just ten applications received. Dominion Vacation For Victory is a third potential source as firms are asked to time staff vacations from mid August. Quick action is essential to determine needs and fairly distribute available help.
The MacUresor School annual meeting finished with five trustee candidates. Abs. J.P. MacKinnon won a seat, HT Trethewey was re-elected, and H.S. Collins became chairman with G.E. Lewin as secretary treasurer. The budget reported receipts of $10,026.21 and varied expenditures, while plans included a principal’s residence purchase and Truancy Act enforcement. The building interior will be redecorated with new stairs and outbuildings painted.
