Challenges Right To Abandon Rail Lines
Wally Cassidy of Radville a retired railway employee challenged the right of Canadian National Railways to abandon branch lines. He pressed Transport Minister George Mcllraith on ownership and authority to pull out of a line. The minister said CNR and Canadian Pacific have management rights under current law. Cassidy argued people own the railway and should control its fate. The minister noted that the issue involves bankrupt lines and that Parliament will consider abandonment legislation in the next session.
