Albert Otis Birch, a 96 year old Sarasota area millionaire who wed his 59 year old nurse last October, was ruled mentally competent by Superior Court Judge Frank Wickhem. Daring dog led rescue on Lake Winnipeg blizzard voyage
A Wes tyan missionary lost amid Lake Winnipeg’s blizzard was saved by a dog team led by Koona the white Esquimaux dog and aided by Jack the second lead. As the storm raged, the dogs worked tirelessly guiding them to shore where they found friendly Indians and shelter. The tale, recounted in Rev. Edgerton R. Young’s By Canoe and Dog Train among the Cree and Saulteaux Indians, highlights loyalty and courage of dogs in extreme cold.
