Grain ships at coast wait as grain drying bottlenecks plague exports
Manitoba agriculture minister said foreign buyers may be looking elsewhere due to a west coast grain tieup. Deputy minister Watt reported a pending inquiry into who bears blame for 20 ships idle offshore and damp grain clogging prairie elevators. Canadian Wheat Board chief McNamara cited above normal demand abroad and priority given to damp last year’s harvest, with a coordinating committee trying to speed unloading and restrict damp shipments. Demurrage runs high, and premier Weir warned costs could reach hundreds of thousands as ships wait for berths and dryers struggle to keep up.
