Federal pension plan changes announced Ottawa
Prime Minister Pearson released a confidential memorandum showing the federal plan to slightly cut pension benefits while building a reserve exceeding 2.5 billion dollars after ten years of contributions. The proposal keeps the 2 percent contribution rate but raises the income ceiling for contributions to 4500 dollars annually. Benefits at age 70 would drop to 20 percent of the ceiling, trimming a projected 25 dollars a month from the earlier 175 dollar monthly pension at maturity. The memorandum invites provincial premiers to comment and indicates legislation will go to a parliamentary committee for study. A federal provincial conference on the issue is not planned.
