Jobless Increase Not As Great As Expected
A Canadian labor report shows mixed results with increases in trade transport communications and public administration offsetting declines in manufacturing and construction. Unemployment rose to 4.7 percent with about 973000 unemployed a year earlier and mid December rates at 4.8 percent seasonally adjusted. The DBS manpower study covers 35000 households for the week ending December 13 and notes Ontario driving much of the December rise.

Not Enough Pollution Evidence In Saskatchewan River Study
Grant Mitchell of the Saskatchewan Water Resources Commission said there is insufficient evidence to blame mercury pollution on any single source in the Saskatchewan River. After meetings with Graham Blight and Interprovincial Co-Operative Ltd representatives, he noted data gaps while Premier Schreyer cited a firm north of Saskatoon as the polluter. Interprovincial Co-Operative Ltd runs a chemical plant near Saskatoon and was identified as the province’s only large mercury user.
