Manitoba swine industry shows strong ROP results
Manitoba breeders in the Record of Performance for Swine program report superior farm stock on age at slaughter, feed efficiency, and carcass score vs Canadian averages for 1961 born hogs. Manitoba averages: 166 days to slaughter, 336 pounds feed per 100 pounds live gain, 77 carcass points. Canada averages: 179 days, 349 pounds, 76 points. Manitoba marketed 519,267 hogs with 29.4 percent A grade, 44.4 percent B, 0.4 percent C, and 6.3 percent sows. Canada totals show different proportions. Experts note fat reduction and better grading possible with lighter marketing weight and better ROP stock.
