Lavenham news recounts visits by Winnipeg Beach residents and local families, messages about social events, curling cup results, and town chatter. Highlights include W.G. Henry Cup play, bonspiel meals, and residents traveling to Brandon and Treherne with various family ties and local comments.
In the Kenana stream annual contest Manitoba anglers show strong results with six of ten top prizes and the top award going to C F Herrguth for a 47 pound 8 ounce trout. Brook Trout flies place Manitoba entries and Herb Albertson earns fifth with a 14 pound 9 ounce pike. Nine of the ten top pike finishers hail from Canada though Manitoba misses the class.
A Royal Commission studied Red River floods after a 1960 disaster. The Red River Investigation, under Canada's Resources and Development department, produced a 1989 report outlining flood control options for Greater Winnipeg. Projects included the Floodway Portage Diversion Ste Agathe Basin and river dyking with various diversions. The report did not include a cost benefit analysis.
The Provincial Government formed a Royal Commission on Flood Cost Benefit in November led by H W Manning with W C Riley W J Macdonald Beaubien and John McDowell. It plans to study flood protection benefits on the Red and Assiniboine Rivers and to report on flood insurance practicability while inviting briefs for public hearings.
