Thompson mayor to appeal welfare case ruling

Mayor Tom Farrell of Thompson Manitoba says the city will appeal a welfare advisory committee decision ordering continued assistance for a Thompson resident. The man, married with three children, was relocated from Elliot Lake Ontario last year by Canada Manpower and had 18 job offers. The city alleges he worked only three days at International Nickel Co. and that he accepted and quit several jobs, while pursuing extra funds through a sham separation with his wife. The committee acknowledged the man’s complicity but held the city must ensure his dependents’ basic needs are met. Farrell said the appeal will argue the recipient must accept reasonable employment under policy.

Manitoba Dairy Shortage Warned By Milk Board

The Milk Control Board of Manitoba warns of a critical dairy product shortage unless farmers obtain higher returns. Fluid milk output rose 5.8 percent to 248.5 million pounds, but costs and labor limits hindered production. The first annual report to the Legislature cites price increases in 1972-73, rising feed and herd replacement costs, harvest conditions, and cattle dynamics as factors. Revenues climbed 18.2 percent to 168 million, with a higher average price per hundredweight, while quotas and market share concerns loom for interprovincial and international trade.
