Indians Metis Given Business Opportunity
Indian and Metis people in northern Manitoba gain business openings through the Communities Economic Development Fund. Since 1972 the fund has arranged 104 loans, 89 directly from the fund, totaling 1,873,550 in its first year. Hugh Jones notes 90 percent of funded ventures are Indigenous owned and operated, spanning stores, a garment plant, taxis, a coffee shop, pool rooms, and even garbage collection. Development officers spend three quarters of their time in northern communities, providing ongoing support beyond initial loans. The fund aims to understand applicants and provide finance or honest advice, acting as a tremendous mechanism for local enterprise.
