Need for Home Guidance for Indian Children Highlighted
Delegates at the Indian Metis Conference in Manitoba urged more home guidance to keep Indian and Metis children in school. Aime Menard from Camperville cited uneducated parents or lack of interest as reasons some youths leave school around age 14. William Rayner noted a provincial survey to gauge how many youths, including Indians, cannot be absorbed in the labor market and suggested returning them to school to learn trades. A community development officer urged Indians to realize their capacity to help themselves and to plan with rather than for their communities. The conference runs for five days and ends today.

Leaf Rust No Serious Threat in Manitoba Wheat 1962
A. L. D. Martin of Manitoba Agriculture notes the 1962 leaf rust outbreak on wheat in Manitoba was severe but caused little lasting damage. Delayed spring seeding due to rain shifted to rust-favorable conditions, with Selkirk and Pembina varieties shown as resistant best bets. Lee is vulnerable to newer stem rust races but remains a secondary option. Early seeding and proper fertilizer can help wheat outrun rust damage.
