Portage Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance 1928 Report
Portage la Prairie directors presented the annual report for 1928 showing total assets of 1 398 233 00 with a surplus of 1 372 897 00 and reserve funds near 372 500 00. Total business in force reached 67 223 535 00 while fire losses remained close to 1927 levels. Chief causes include poorly fitted stove pipes loose matches and manure around houses with new stubble burning posing a rising risk. Community Notes From Katrime and Surroundings
Mr Hartley West of Ogilvie spent the weekend in Katrime with Mrs J Wells of Wellwood visiting district friends. A Whist Drive is planned for Friday February 8 at the Hat. The Misses Grace and Isabel Mc Lachlin visited Portage la Prairie last week. Roland Thomas has returned home after a period in the West leading elevators. Mrs McConeghy and son Garland of Mayfield spent the weekend with sister Mrs Geo Jack. Don’t miss the masquerade dance on Thursday February 15 with prizes for best home made comic and hired costumes. A whist drive at the Community Hall last Friday awarded prizes to Mrs McConeghy and Lionel Smith with consolations to Mrs Geo Jack and Fred W Borton. Season leaders are Mrs E B Gordon 580 and Roy McLachlan 691.

Beaver Masquerade Dance and Local Events
Beaver school hosts a masquerade dance on Friday February 22 featuring Four Piece Orchestra and prizes for costumes. First prize from last Friday’s whist drive went to Miss Rothwell and John Dankesreiter. A Miscellaneous Sale on March 2 at the school grounds asks for contributions. Community Club forms Mock Parliament with Lt. Gov. G S Thompson as Premier and a first session set for February 18 with bills to be discussed.
