New Medicare Rates Announced For Manitoba Plan
The Manitoba government unveiled new compulsory medical insurance effective April 1 with a family premium of 9.80 and individual 4.90. Doctors may bill about 85 percent of the Manitoba Medical Association fee schedule with no extra charges. Total first year cost is estimated at 355 million including optical and chiropractic services. Combined hospital and medical premiums will total 17 per family and 8.50 per single. Premier Walter Weir and Health Minister George Johnson outlined details noting many doctors may stay outside the plan unless patient involvement is allowed. Dependent children and public assistance recipients are covered without premiums. The plan aims to match costs with other provinces and should hold through at least two years.
