Jubilee barley seed scarce for Manitoba farmers

Jubilee barley seed will be scarce in Manitoba as only one elite seed grower in the province secured seed for multiplication. Saskatchewan growers are the nearest source. Jubilee, developed at the University of Saskatchewan and licensed for sale in 1960, is similar to Husky but may be more acceptable to growers. Registered seed is available from Saskatchewan Seed Co-operative for 3 per bushel. Farmers are advised to sow feed varieties rather than malting varieties to meet livestock needs. In other farming news, farm cash income from sale of farm products reached a record 2 121.0 million for the first nine months of 1961, driven by wheat, flaxseed, tobacco, cattle, hogs, dairy, poultry, and Wheat Board payments, offset by lower potato sales and other declines. A New Zealand shearer set a world record by counting and shearing 606 lambs in a nine-hour day, earning nearly 500. A North Norfolk Junior Farmers meeting is planned for February 7 at 8 p.m. in the Legion Room, MacGregor, with guest speaker L Sedgewick on Performance Testing and Livestock Housing. Copies of TV Short Course kits and the Agronomists Report will be available.
