Winter ice safety tips from Red Cross Water Safety Service
The Red Cross offers timely guidance for winter ice safety. It stresses ice should be four inches thick for skating and eight inches for snowmobiling, notes that freezing thawing weakens ice, and warns about rotten ice with sun exposure. If someone falls in, lie flat, extend a reachable aid, and pull them to safety while keeping both on the ice. Report incidents to police and keep children supervised near frozen surfaces.
