Diefenbaker Attacks Government Over Wheat Market Share
Former prime minister John Diefenbaker charged the government with unfounded claims about Canada holding its world wheat market share. He cited a drop from 27 per cent in 1966-67 to 19 per cent recently and predicted an even lower share this year. The Commons discussed a bill to authorize provisional farmer payments for unthreshed grain, with Otto Lang noting $231,446,136 in advances outstanding as of Nov 28, most of which were from the current crop year. The bill proposes a $3,000 advance per farmer for wheat in the field and $3,000 for stored grain, matching the prior $6,000 limit for stored grain under the Prairie Advance Payments Act.
