Grasshopper forecast flags bigger Manitoba outbreak in 1962
Entomologists from Canada’s agriculture department predict a sharper grasshopper infestation in Manitoba in 1962 than in 1961. Major outbreak zones cover the southwest, north of the south central district, and the Red River Valley, with new pockets expanding to about 4 000 square miles and severity roughly doubling due to hot dry weather in 1961. The egg-based forecast notes light to very severe infestations, with a notable severe pocket south of Neepawa and moderate areas around MacGregor and the Red River Valley toward Portage la Prairie.
