Perennial Thistle Eradication and Grasshopper Outlook Report
Manitoba agriculture outlines a two to three year Perennial Thistle Eradication Program to combat Canada and Low thistle, with meetings for farmers on cultural and chemical controls. Grasshoppers are forecast to be severe in 1963, with a 10 percent larger infested area and 4 percent higher density, centered in Ste. Rose to Brandon to Portage la Prairie. The north central outbreak includes a 100 square mile pocket near Sidney and Austin. Dave Durksen reports on Manitoba exports to Europe, highlighting rapeseed quality, mustard, and creamette yellow peas as potential markets, with emphasis on price competitiveness. An Advanced Farm Welding Course is slated for Portage la Prairie Feb 25 to Mar 1, and a January 15–17 TV short course on farming is listed.
