A passenger recounts a perilous voyage to Liverpool aboard the MacGregor with 1 653 souls. Strong winds fog icebergs hampered progress, delaying arrival by three days despite attempts to press on.
Portage sent 150 of active service and 60 of the 99th regiment with A squadron Mounted Rifles left Shelepot at 10 40 Sunday morning. The men paraded and bid farewell at Marys church while Lieut Neale urged them to uphold the flag. The city pledged confidence they would do well and welcomed their return.
