Elevator fire destroys Portage la Prairie facility
A Manitoba Pool Elevator C in Portage la Prairie suffered near one million dollars in damage from a Monday evening blaze. The 40 000 bushel elevator burned with its cupola collapsing and sparked embers injuring nearby roofs and siding. Grant’s grocery at Fifth Avenue West also burned, with no injuries reported. Firefighters from Portage la Prairie and CFB Portage fought the flames amid high winds. eight grain cars were moved away and hot embers set grass and adjacent areas alight. Cause is undetermined though embers from the burning elevator were blamed for starting the Grant’s fire.
