Local notes recount Matt Little of MacGregor presenting a 22 inch field telescope, once owned by Mrs. Little’s great uncle, a ship captain. The instrument, praised as high power and museum-worthy, has drawn offers from Hudson Bay Co but remains with the owner.
The MacGregor School lists many repairs and upgrades completed during vacation including new basement steps outside doors blackboards seats and a new septic toilet system with a cistern. G Wells of Winnipeg is hired as assistant, joining staff with principal W C Hardy and A J Struthers. Garnet Pennell received grades after Grade XI exams with six passes and a supplement in Composition.
A large vacation school at Bethel Chan day morning organized three classes for Primary Juniors with activities including singing storytelling Bible handwork and percussion. The children and teachers invite the community to a Friday night program at the United Church Annex featuring lively singing recitations and displays.
The notice lists a Sunday School at 11.00 am with no church service by Pastor L. Dickinson, a 3.30 pm afternoon event, and an 8.00 pm meeting at Mayfeld Community Hall. It also announces an August 18 Vacation Bible School achievement program to be held in the United Church Annex.
Foss Giffin, longtime proprietor of the Manitou drug store for 23 years, has retired and moved to Portage. He was honored with a testimonial banquet by friends and business associates before his departure, and has played a leading role in the town's community activities.
Village council minutes report a brief session with all members and Mayor W H Montgomery present. Resolutions approved include building permits for Albert Park and Robert ONeill, transfer of Pt Block G Plan 210 to G F Alpinet, permission for George Albinet to remove earth on Hampton Street for fill, a photographer license for Fred Clarke in 1950 for 5 dollars, and Finance Committee approved accounts before adjournment. Meeting set to reconvene Tuesday September 26.
A 19 or 20 year old bride of two weeks, Mrs Arthur Martin of Portage la Prairie, died at Portage General Hospital last night from injuries after a highway crash eight miles west of Portage. She died at 7 20 without regaining consciousness. Five were injured when a moving car hit a parked auto. Arden Christianson, about 30, of Portage was the driver of the car in which Mrs Martin and her husband were passengers.
The notice reports crops progressing well with barley and oats heavy and wheat good where not drowned. Flax looks better than usual and harvest is expected to begin in three weeks. Ideal weather with cool nights and ample haying, minor aphid invasion but unlikely to cause serious damage. A club invites members or interested parties to MEMORIAL HALL on Aug 21 for the coming year.
The MacGregor Calf Club held its annual meeting at Memorial Hall with thirteen members reporting a successful 1949 50 year led by A E Chant and EK W Cox A busy year included a Delta Beach picnic a dance at Macaulay School and proceeds donated to various causes The club participated in judging contests at N Hulme farm and at Bagot Club events with members placing in fat calf shorthorn and hereford contests Jimmy Cox and Nelson Hulme led showmanship results A barn dance on July 15 wound up the term and funds were raised to support another year The club thanks J Forbes agricultural representative for assistance during the year
In two August weddings at St James Anglican Church and Peggy's Pantry, Irene Lawson and Roland Kilfoyle wed in a double ring ceremony officiated by Rev. W Donnelly, with Miss Isabel Kilfoyle as bridesmaid and Henry Hughson as best man. Elizabeth May Temp and Nicholas Dragonoff married next day with a large reception at Ukranian Hall, attended by Mrs. Forman and other relatives. The Kilfoyles will reside in Manitou and the Dragonoffs in Geraldton.
MacGregor hosts Austin in a 4-3 loss with Critchlow and Rodgers on the mound. Cobbe Lamb and Garnet Critchlow drove MacGregor runs. Cubs fall twice in Winnipeg to Earl Grey Juniors, 7-3 and 4-1, with Ol and Cobbe pitching. Seniors head to Treherne for a hardball tourney as rain delays finish the week.
Seniors will meet to display their prowess at a turkey supper held Monday evening at 8 o’clock. The Cubs earned the meal by defeating Oakville Juniors and most of the team attended, courtesy of manager Walter Critchlow.
