Wheat cutting in Manitoba is under way with fall rye nearly finished and substantial barley and oat harvests. Variations in ripening and yield are sharp due to patchy summer rains. Some districts near each other show yields differing by at least a factor of two. Dairy prices are higher, butter in storage and egg counts are changing.
Prime Minister King announced a fixed minimum price of 80 cents per bushel for No 1 Northern wheat at Fort William, set by the Canadian Wheat Board after a cabinet meeting. He affirmed no change to marketing policy, with world price sales and no hoarding or monopolistic aims, a statement from W D Euler.
The milling and grain trades are advised that despite an internal initial price of 80 cents a bushel, the Canadian Wheat Board will continue encouraging Canadian wheat use, keeping it competitive on world markets. The fixed price is lower than 874 cents seen during the prior three years, yet higher than the October futures price of 76 cents on the Winnipeg Grain Exchange Thursday.
