Shelterbelts Cut Wind and Moisture Loss in Prairie Fields

Ag. Rep. News summarizes studies from W. J. Staple at the Swift Current Exper Farm Canada on shelterbelts reducing wind speeds and soil evaporation. Measurements show crosswind reductions up to 20 times tree height, with 19 percent summer wind speed drops and 5 percent center strip evaporation reductions in 20 foot shelterbelts, plus 12 percent at five rods from belts. Snow drift patterns, soil moisture near hedges, and wheat yields are discussed, along with a Seed Drill Survey by Carberry and MacGregor Seed Clubs via the Manitoba Extension Service and the Canada Department of Agriculture. Results show seed grades, cleaning losses, smut and ergot infection, and calls for germination tests and seed treatment.
