Incentive program creating jobs gains eyed by official
Tom Kent, deputy minister of regional economic expansion, told the Senate finance committee that the regional industrial incentive program shows gratifying job creating potential during a transitional phase. He expects the much changed program starting this year to improve employment prospects in economically disadvantaged regions, while noting the overall unemployment level depends on broader economic policy. Kent discussed 1970-71 spending estimates of 267 million dollars, up 75 million from last year, with 20 million for industrial incentives and 50 million for a development program in 22 designated areas.

Austerity Forcing Cuts To Fisheries Research Programs
Dr. J. R. Weir told MPs austerity has forced a major cut in fisheries board programs reducing salary items by 235000 dollars yearly. A new freshwater research institute building at University of Manitoba Winnipeg was delayed a year and three vessels tied up. Scientists are moved between programs to face crises including Nova Scotia pilchard mercury pollution in Lake St. Clair and Newfoundland waters.
