Research on fertilizer response varies with soil nutrients
Research from the University of Manitoba and Brandon Experimental Farm shows soil nutrient levels drive crop responses to fertilizer. In 1957 barley yields ranged from two to 21 bushels per acre. nitrogen samples varied from 19 to 150 pounds per acre, with phosphorus ranging from three to 190 pounds. Soils high in both nutrients often did not respond to added nitrogen or phosphorus, but did respond to correct fertilizer rates.
