Fertilizers Improve Water Use For Wheat Study
Manitoba researchers show higher soil fertility reduces water needs for wheat. Fertilized fallow plots yielded 482 bushels per acre using 1299 inches of water, while unfertilized checks produced two bushels less and used more water. Soils specialist R A Wallace urges farmers to fertilize to boost moisture efficiency.

Oil Development Possible In Southwestern Man
Manitoba minister of mines C H Witney says a substantial oil development may occur at Pierson in the southwest, with exploration drilling finding oil though awaiting geological evaluation. He notes 1961 oil leasing rose in Boissevain Pierson Tilston areas and geophysical surveys followed. He cites secondary recovery could add about 30 million barrels from North Virden Scallion, Daly and Virden Roseislea fields, while North Virden Scallion and Daly-Virden Roseislea produced 86 percent of crude to date and hold most remaining recoverable reserves. Production started 1951 and peaked 8.08 million barrels in 1957, then declined to 4.48 million in 1961. Witney also says plans for a third refinery in Winnipeg could greatly expand refining capacity, with a refinery under construction at The Pas.
