Queensland cement shortage prompts new plant expansion
A letter from the Queensland Cement and Lime Co. Ltd reports demand far outstripping supply with a deficit over 80 000 tons. The firm has invested about £600 000 in extra plant not yet operational for around three months, aiming to ease shortfall to 50 000 tons in the first year and up to 100 000 tons in subsequent years. A North Australian Cement Co. project at Stuart near Townsville plans 60 000 tons in 1954, but import bans and self‑supply changes hinder early relief. eighteen months may bring substantial improvement.

Scout Hut Plans Revised for Longreach Scouts
Plans for the Ian Alford Memorial Hut were revised to cut costs with a steel frame option estimated under £1000, against an earlier £2650 plan. A wooden building was also sought, while enrolments reach 46 Cubs under Cub Master Eisley with another assistant needed. Camping and Jamboree preparations, Scout Week events, and a financial summary show a healthy but cautious program with a July meeting and August activities including a Juvenile Debutantes Ball.
